Welcome to Mindfulness Essentials!
OPEN, PRODUCTIVE DISCUSSIONS WELCOME!
These mindful materials are created for students at Schilz Martial Arts—and for anyone seeking balance, focus, and clarity. After every kickboxing class, we take a moment to shift from physical training to mental centering. These reflections are designed to help calm the mind, release stress, and strengthen your inner agility—the same way training strengthens your body.

Each lesson—whether you read it, watch it, or listen to it—isn’t meant to give you answers, but to invite reflection. The thoughts shared here come from personal experience, study, and perspective. You’re not meant to think or act like me; instead, you’re encouraged to pause, consider, and connect with what truly matters to you.

If a lesson speaks to you, take it with you. If it doesn’t, let it pass. Either way, your presence and reflection are appreciated.
Audio versions of certain lessons are marked with the  icon, and more past lessons are being converted over time—so check back for updates. If there’s a particular lesson you’d like to hear read aloud, or a topic you’d like explored, please share your thoughts in the Comments section.

Convincing Confidence Day 2: Belief That Others Can Feel

3/31/2026

“Act as if what you make a difference. You do."
We start from the saying that “What you say and what you do are two different Actions”.  There is a world of difference between what you say and believe in and what you believe in and take action on.  People know the difference between confidence backed by movement and confidence that is merely words that sound strong.  When someone is uncertain, their words may sound confident, but their actions reveal hesitation.  Their body language is unsure.  Their decisions are delayed.

Convincing confidence shows up differently.  It is calm, clear, and steady.  People who truly believe in what they are doing move with purpose, and clarity is their direction.  In martial arts, this is obvious.  Students who throw a punch half their power they do not convince anyone of the power emanating from within.  But when someone strikes with commitment, even a simple movement becomes powerful.

Never train your confidence for the sole purpose of impressing others.  Impress others solely for the purpose of building your own confidence for yourself.  Belief becomes convincing when it is backed by action.

Convincing Confidence Day 1: Begin With Commitment

3/30/2026

Confidence is often talked about as if it were simply a feeling—something we hope to have when the time is right.  It is a feeling that makes us feel strong and independent.  We are a ‘Special Forces Soldier’, all to ourselves.  But real confidence is much deeper than a feeling.  It is a commitment to who we are, what we believe, and what we are willing to work hard for.  It’s easy to have confidence in ourselves when everyone agrees with us.  The confidence being discussed here is the unshakable, undeniable respect we have for our decisions.  Have you put in the honest work to create, substantiate, and support a decision you are willing to fight or die for?

Confidence does not appear out of thin air.  It needs to grow from commitment.  When we commit to something—our health, our training, our work, our families, or our character—we begin to build a foundation of confidence through trial and error.  It is the humility of error that we gain our greatest foundation.  Many people want confidence before they commit.  They want to know that whatever they commit their confidence to will be popular and exist without opposition.  They want to feel certain before they start.  But the truth is the opposite.  Confidence is the reward for commitment, not the prerequisite.

When we show up consistently to our jobs, to our workout, to our training, especially when we don’t feel like it, we start proving something to ourselves.  Every workout, every difficult conversation, every step forward strengthens our belief that we are capable.

In self-defense, this is the only thing that makes the difference between success and failure.  You either have the committed desire to succeed and the confidence that you will succeed, BEFORE a confrontation can begin and turn out in your favor.

Convincing Confidence

Confidence is often talked about as if it were simply a feeling—something we hope to have when the time is right.  But real confidence is much deeper than a feeling.  It is a commitment to who we are, what we believe, and what we are willing to work for.

True success in life requires more than believing in ourselves; it requires being convinced that what we are doing and who we are becoming are on the right path. When our confidence is rooted in preparation, discipline, and commitment, others can feel it and see it.  Our actions begin to match our words.  Our posture, our decisions, and our effort reflect certainty instead of hesitation.

Convincing confidence is not arrogance.  It is a quiet conviction.  It is the result of doing the work when no one is watching and standing firmly in who we have chosen to become.

Day 1: Begin With Commitment
Day 2: Belief That Others Can Feel
Day 3: Preparation Builds Conviction
Day 4: Confidence Without Arrogance
Day 5: Living What You Say
Day 6: Being Fully Convinced

Convincing confidence is more than believing in yourself—it is proving that belief through commitment, preparation, and consistent action. It grows when we show up repeatedly, especially when it would be easier not to. It is strengthened when our actions align with our values and our words match our behavior.

When confidence is built this way, it becomes convincing—not because we try to persuade others, but because our conviction is visible in everything we do.
The world responds differently to people who are fully committed to who they are becoming.

Confidence may begin as a feeling, but convincing confidence becomes a way of living.

Honor Your Decisions Day 6: Decide, Commit, Reveal

3/3/2026

“Who you become is shaped by the decisions you honor.”
Honoring your decision is a committed state of your mind.  Insecurity will always sway you from what might be the best decision of your life, or it will remain the perfect pathway of inaction.  You put a lot of thought and past experiences into making a decision.  Now is the time to make a decision and stand by it.  You commit to your actions and decisions.  Not allowing anyone to simply show up and say, “No, this is the truth, change your mind.”

Once you’ve committed yourself, stay the course.  Committing to your decision shows the honor you have for your freedom of choice.  Your free will is a special privilege we have that should not be taken for granted or ignored.

Now that you’ve decided to commit, and you’ve placed your seal of approval on your decision, reveal the outcome.  Your personal identity is tied to your commitment and discipline in following through on your actions.  As you repeat your committed actions, your ability to decide, commit, and follow through will become your life’s direction and path.

Honor Your Decisions Day 5: Pressures Reveal Commitment

3/2/2026

“Consistency is confidence in motion.”
When decisions are made, and there is very little to no contradiction, it is easy to stand by your decision.    Are you someone who believes in your strength to decide on what matters and then stand by it?  Or someone who feels the first bit of discomfort from an opposing opinion, and you feel unworthy and insufficient?  You feel like your voice is not loud enough or educated enough to be worthy of an opinion.

Pressure reveals whether or not your decision was real.  When others question you, doubt you, or challenge your resolve, it’s an opportunity to reinforce your commitment to fall to someone else’s.  You don’t need to explain every decision.  You don’t need their approval.  Someone else’s life direction is not your path, and the two paths never need to parallel one another.  Quiet consistency speaks louder than any defense.  Someone may very well look at you and say, ‘Who are you to say?’  Don’t fall into it.  I don’t need to defend myself when my morals and ethics are perfectly fine.  Stay steady and know I am an individual who possesses the power to agree or disagree without being judged.  I can make decisions without guilt or disgrace.  I can reeducate myself without being led by others.  Let your time and discipline do the talking.  Honor your decisions by standing firm without aggression or apology.

Honor Your Decisions Day 4: Honor The Consequences

3/1/2026

“Responsibility is the price of freedom.”
When we dream about our future and set goals, do we ever think about the consequences that will occur if we don’t stick to our decisions or what the consequences mean outside of our own benefit, to others?  Do we think about the repercussions of what it means to us and what it could mean to others if we succeed or fail?  To begin our goal setting, we focus on the objective of success.  Rarely do we take the time to include possible challenges.  Some of those challenges might include the need for additional education, more time in a standard 8-hour workday, or an occasional 7-day workweek.  This added time needs to come from somewhere, and it could very well be family.

Your fitness goals should include strategies for days when you are overwhelmed at work, such as prioritizing your time.  What happens when you are exhausted and feeling exhausted, even though your fitness goals are important?  This is when discipline kicks in, and priorities are maintained for long-term health.  Other consequences will be less evident to those watching you and to those motivated by your decisions and dedication.

Every decision carries consequences; some are welcome, and some are more difficult for us to manage.  Have you ever designed a goal with others in mind?  Starting a business to provide for your community is part of your goal.  The benefits don’t always need to be title and money.  Some people will view the consequences as a burden to bear.  That approach will burn you out when you view your gifts as burdens.  Study those consequences and own them, saying to yourself, ‘These are mine,’ and I will be proud of the ups and downs needed to succeed.

When you honor your consequences, you stop blaming people, timing, or circumstances.  You take ownership of outcomes and use them as a source of instruction.  Pain from the hard consequences is not punishment; it's feedback.  Success is not earned through entitlement; it is earned through your hard work and ability to accept responsibility for all you do.
